Models of care for CVD prevention after hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: a systematic review
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in women. They also contribute significantly to disability. Women with a history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) have an increased risk of CVDs. To mitigate this risk, it is critical that care pathways are established early after pregnancies complicated by HDPs.
Models of care
Models of care are ways in which health services are delivered for individuals and populations as they experience various stages of health and illness. They're designed to ensure people receive the right care, at the right time, by the right team and in the right place.
Models of care for CVD prevention focus on early detection and management of risk factors. They also promote healthy lifestyles to reduce the incidence of CVD events.
Student opportunities
Review & describe effective strategies
This project aims to review the available evidence on the models of care for preventing CVDs in women with a history of HDPs and describe the most effective strategies.
Students will learn to identify, critically appraise and synthesise all available literature relevant to the research question.
They will conduct all aspects of a systematic review, including:
- defining the research questions
- writing the protocol
- developing the search strategy (in consultation with a librarian)
- identifying relevant literature
- screening
- quality assessment
- data extraction and synthesis.
Students will gain skills in critically appraising literature and identifying gaps in knowledge.
As this is a mixed-methods systematic review, students will also gain skills in synthesising both quantitative and qualitative evidence. They will learn to combine quantitative data from multiple studies to determine the most effective strategies.
As well, students will integrate findings from multiple qualitative research studies to gain a deeper understanding of complex strategies and interventions.
