Mapping existing models of extended postpartum care and its benefits: a scoping review

Open to students

Pregnancy and childbirth can exacerbate some medical conditions or cause them to emerge. Some of these conditions are only visible months or even years after delivery. Examples include depression, anxiety, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction, incontinence and weight retention.

To promptly identify and appropriately manage these conditions, a more comprehensive health service delivery is needed. It should extend beyond 6 weeks postpartum and embrace multidisciplinary models of care.

Conduct a scoping review

The project will conduct a scoping review that will map out the existing models of extended postpartum care and its benefits. The review will generate evidence on the optimal implementation strategies for extended postpartum care to inform public health policy and practice.

Students will use a systematic and iterative approach to identify and synthesise all evidence on the topic. They will learn to map the breadth of evidence, identify key concepts, the type of evidence and research gaps.

Students will conduct all aspects of a scoping review including:

  • defining the research questions
  • writing the protocol
  • developing the search strategy (in consultation with a librarian)
  • identifying relevant literature
  • screening
  • data extraction and synthesis.

Students will also learn to identify gaps in knowledge to inform future research.
