About the toolkit

Who is the toolkit for?

The toolkit helps pharmacists, pharmacy assistants and other health professionals working in pharmacy settings expand access to hepatitis C care for their communities.

You'll benefit from this toolkit if:

  • you're expanding your pharmacy's scope of practice
  • you're exploring pharmacy-based testing and referral
  • you're trying to reach OAT/underserved populations
  • you're interested in hepatitis C elimination.

What's in the toolkit?

There are 4 key sections:

  • Hepatitis C basics: the treatment landscape, how testing works, and who's eligible.
  • Pharmacy in practice: ways you can support hepatitis C care, and how to work with people who are are at risk of hepatitis C as well as advanced liver disease.
  • Communication in practice: how to start the conversation, answer patient questions and create a welcoming environment.
  • Resources and support: referral advice, where to find more clinical information and other educational materials.

The toolkit is focused on engaging people with hepatitis C who may not have accessed care elsewhere – particularly those who have not been tested, treated or cured.

What will I learn?

After completing the toolkit, pharmacists should be able to:

  • describe risk factors for hepatitis C, enabling discussions with people around testing, prevention, and harm reduction
  • communicate effectively and competently with people about testing, treatment, and support available for hepatitis C, reducing stigma and discrimination
  • describe the pharmacist’s role in assisting with screening and treatment pathways for hepatitis C, supporting people to overcome barriers to successful diagnosis and treatment.

Hepatitis C pharmacist education

The toolkit supports EXPAND-C, one of the first projects funded by our research accelerator program Burnext. EXPAND-C seeks to offer information, counselling, testing, and treatment referral to people at risk of hepatitis C in pharmacies across Victoria.
