Evaluating the sustainability of the WHO Labor Care Guide in Karnataka, India
In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the WHO Labor Care Guide (LCG). The guide was developed to promote women-centred care during labour and childbirth while maintaining effective monitoring.
In India, from 2021 to 2022, Burnet introduced the LCG strategy into four hospitals. To do this, we used a pragmatic, stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised trial. In the nine months following the trial, three hospitals opted to continue with the LCG.
We conducted nineteen semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of healthcare providers from these hospitals. These interviews explored factors associated with sustained use of the LCG.
Student opportunities
Analyse qualitative data
The project involves the analysis of qualitative data from the interviews to understand the determinants of sustained LCG use.
Data will be analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.
Students will learn how to:
- organise and code qualitative data using the NVivo software
- code interview transcripts line-by-line to identify trends and patterns in the data and inductively generate themes and sub-themes
- organise themes to answer qualitative research questions, while simultaneously reflecting on their own influence on the analysis
- report the findings of qualitative research for a peer-reviewed article.
