Vanuatu earthquake anniversary: Burnet reaffirms recovery commitment
Burnet Institute joins the people of Vanuatu in marking one year since the magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck on December 17, 2024.
Today, we remember those who lost their lives and acknowledge the lasting impact the earthquake has had on families and communities across Port Vila and SHEFA Province.
We reaffirm our commitment to supporting Vanuatu’s recovery and the Vanuatu Ministry of Health’s efforts to strengthen national health emergency preparedness.
The earthquake caused widespread damage to Port Vila and communities across SHEFA Province, affecting homes, schools, health facilities, and other essential services. Water supply systems were destroyed, power and communications were disrupted, and the Vanuatu National Hospital sustained significant damage.
Burnet Vanuatu Country Representative Kali Ameara said the team remains committed to working alongside the Ministry of Health to rebuild and strengthen the country’s health system.
“One year ago, the island of Efate was shaken to its core. Today, we pause to remember those who lost their lives,” he said.
“We recognise the strength and unity shown by our local communities during challenging times. Burnet remains committed to serving our communities.”
Over the past year, recovery efforts have shifted from emergency response to long-term planning and resilience.
In the weeks following the earthquake, Burnet provided support through the National Health Emergency Operations Centre, contributing to the coordination of health responses and supporting the Disease Surveillance Unit.
This commitment continues with a focus on strengthening health systems to be more responsive and resilient, and by improving emergency preparedness.
On this anniversary, Burnet Vanuatu observes the day in quiet reflection, honouring those who were lost and recognising the resilience of communities across Vanuatu.
