Developing malaria vaccines using mRNA technology

Congratulations to Professor James Beeson, Burnet deputy director of research strategy, Dr Adam Thomas, senior research officer for malaria vaccines, and Dr Herbert Opi, senior research fellow, on receiving the prestigious Grand Challenges Grant from the Gates Foundation.

The Grand Challenges Grant Scheme will support pioneering research into next-generation mRNA vaccine technologies.

This project will drive innovative research aimed at improving mRNA vaccine design, and contribute toward developing effective vaccines for malaria control and elimination.

Dr Thomas, whose work focuses on molecular immunology and vaccine platforms, emphasised the importance of innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

“Difficult malaria challenges require innovative solutions to overcome barriers in vaccine development,” he said.

“The mRNA platform offers advantages that could lead to effective next-generation malaria vaccines accessible to all at-risk populations.”

The Grand Challenges Grant Scheme is a global initiative that fosters innovation to address the world’s most urgent health and development problems.

This project will bring together multidisciplinary expertise across malaria immunology and parasitology, molecular biology, and vaccine engineering, with the shared mission of advancing equitable vaccine solutions for communities most in need.

This award was funded by the Gates Foundation through Grand Challenges, a global partnership that catalyses innovation and provides a platform for partners to collaborate and drive lasting impact.
