Dr Lindi Masson
Deputy Program Director, Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health; Co-Head, Global Women’s and Newborn’s Health
Working groups

Background
Lindi has been involved in women’s and girls’ sexual and reproductive health research for over 15 years. She heads research groups at Burnet Institute and the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. The focus of her work is to understand risk factors for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and adverse birth outcomes in women and girls. Her work aims to use this knowledge to develop affordable and feasible tools to improve sexual and reproductive health, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Lindi has experience leading clinical studies in resource-limited settings, developing point-of-care diagnostic tests and biotherapeutics, as well as characterising vaginal microbiome and immunological profiles using approaches such as metaproteomics, culturomics, luminex and flow cytometry.

The vaginal microbiome is a key determinant of a women’s sexual and reproductive health. There is an unmet need for effective non-antibiotic-based strategies to target bacterial vaginosis and its adverse sequelae.
Diagnostics for preterm birth risk prediction in pregnant Australians
We aim to advance point-of-care diagnostics for spontaneous preterm birth caused by infection in Australian women, including First Nations women

Bacterial vaginosis point-of-care diagnostics
Bacterial vaginosis increases risk of HIV acquisition and adverse birth outcomes. We're developing a low-cost point-of-care diagnostic test for BV.
