The oral health of people who inject drugs (PWID)

The oral health of people who inject drugs (PWID) is a particularly neglected topic in addiction research. A small number of studies have examined the health and oral health needs of this population.

Although little is known about the effects of different types of drugs on oral health, the current body of knowledge indicates that dental problems are common among PWID. The accessibility to dental care services in Australia has often been described as less than idea, especially for lower socioeconomic groups such as PWID.

This project will seek to explore the oral health outcomes of PWID to help guide future research in this topic.
