Rebecca has had a varied career working with and supporting communities both locally and internationally, including over 10 years working in International Development. Most recently she has worked with Australian Volunteers International (AVI) living in Papua New Guinea (PNG) on and off for over five years as both a volunteer and later as Country Director. When she was a volunteer, she lived in Bougainville for two years in a village setting which was a Safe House for women and children victims of violence. During this time Rebecca developed a passion for working with grass root communities to build and strengthen their capacity. She returned to PNG with AVI to manage the Australian Volunteers program across the country at a time of great change, expanding the program across while strengthening partnerships, including partnering with Burnet Institute in their RID-TB program (Daru) and the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies program (Kokopo). She has also worked for AVI in the Melbourne office, supporting country programs globally.
In the past few years, after returning home, she has worked in the Victorian State Government a major change program called Safer Together. Working across Victoria with both CFA (Country Fire Authority) and DELWP (Dept. of Environment, Land, Water and Planning), she managed the community engagement priority program. Using research outcomes and good development practices, underpinned by the priority of Shared Responsibility, Rebecca worked to connect communities with fire agencies and Local Government to help them to understand, manage and decrease their bushfire risk.
