In Papua New Guinea, 1500+ women die every year from childbirth-related causes – 80 times higher than in Australia. And these deaths are, mostly, preventable.
Worked in TB/HIV programs in Southern Africa since 2004 with MSF IN Kenya and Malawi, and with BIPAI/The Global TB Program (Baylor College of Medicine, Houston) in Swaziland for the last eight years. These programs would combine direct clinical care with technical assistance to the different national programs.
Good clinical skills in managing DR-TB and treatment experience HIV clients.
Personal interest in access to health care through decentralising services, task shifting and access to new drugs, with a special interest in paediatrics and adolescents. Also interested in building local capacity, especially through mentorship programs.
Supported Swaziland in setting up of a TB Centre of Excellence, which would offer comprehensive TB/HIV clinical services; provide on-site training for health care workers; and developed the National Laboratory translational research program which assisted in bringing new TB diagnostic techniques to Swaziland.
