Dr Megan Lim, Head of Sexual Health Research in the Centre for Population Health, was among the winners of the 2015 Burnet Institute Travel Awards. .

The Beever Fellowship Award will support Dr Lim’s research into young people’s health and the role of new communications technologies in public health.

“The award will take some of the pressure off in terms of grant applications and fellowships and will allow me to focus on my research a little bit more, so hopefully I will be producing some good work over the next year,” Dr Lim said.

“I’ll be focusing on continuing my work with young people and social media, and I’m bringing on a PhD student to do some work in pornography.”

Research Assistant Josh Hayward was one of three members of the Tachedjian Laboratory in the Centre for Biomedical Research to win an award.

The Harold Mitchell Post-Graduate Travel Fellowship will enable him to further his research into retroviral biology and antivirals.

“I intend to visit the Genomics Institute in Maryland (USA) to work under one of the world’s foremost practitioners of microbiota analysis,” Mr Hayward said.

“I want to look at all the different populations of microbes in women who might be suffering from various viruses and how those different microbiota affect those diseases.

“We would like to study that at Burnet but we don’t yet know how to do it, so I’m going over there to learn from the world’s best.

“Without this award, that would not be possible.”

PhD student Kat Ryan plans to attend the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, in July next year thanks to her Miller Foundation Public Health Travel Fellowship.

“To be able to go over and present my work at an international conference will be really good, and to be able to meet people who do work that I’m really interested in will be amazing,” Ms Ryan said.

“I’m also going to visit some of the community-based testing sites over there and compare what they have with what we do here in Melbourne.”
