NHMRC appointment for A/Prof Joshua Vogel

Burnet Institute

17 December, 2021

Congratulations to Burnet Institute Principal Research Fellow, Associate Professor Joshua Vogel for his appointment to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Research Committee for 2021-2024.

Associate Professor Vogel, whose work focuses on maternal and perinatal health issues affecting women and families living in resource-constrained settings, has been appointed for his expertise in clinical medicine and science.

The NHMRC Research Committee advises on the distribution of funding and policies for the NHMRC grant program and on the scope and quality of health and medical research in Australia.

In June, Associate Professor Vogel was acknowledged for his leadership and excellence in research with two prestigious awards - the 2020 NHMRC Peter Doherty Investigator Grant Award (Emerging Leadership), and the 2021 Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research, valued at $50,000.

The awards are given annually to the top-ranked recipient of NHMRC Investigator Grants in the Emerging Leadership category following peer review of applications.

Membership of the NHMRC Principal Committees brings together expertise in biomedical science, clinical and public health, nursing, ethics, social sciences, health care training and the medical profession, as well as business and consumer perspectives, and expertise in the health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and of people with disability.

Together with the new Council, chaired by Burnet Institute Co-Program Director, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, Professor Caroline Homer AO, NHMRC’s Principal Committees will support NHMRC in its mission of building a healthy Australia.

Of the 47 Principal Committee positions, almost 60 percent are held by women, and two of the three chairs are women.
