Big Day Out: Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll

Participants completing Burnet's 2013 Big Day Out survey.

On Friday 24 January, our staff volunteers will conduct a risk behaviour survey of young people attending the Big Day Out (BDO).

BDO, having hosted headline acts such as Nirvana, Neil Young, The Ramones and Coldplay, attracts a young audience and is an ideal opportunity to survey them about their sexual risk behaviour, alcohol and drug use.

The festival also gives Burnet’s Centre for Population Health researchers an opportunity to share with this population group information about sexual health and behaviour that may place them at risk of sexually transmitted infections.

The 10th survey of Burnet’s Big Day Out study will include new questions on synthetic drugs, online pornography, bullying and mental health.

Showbags containing safer sex and other harm reduction information are given out to survey participants and other BDO patrons.

We hope to collect 1500 plus surveys – making it as successful as past years, where we have been able to reach more than 12,000 people!
