Alastair Lucas AO made an enormous contribution to the Institute as a long-standing Chair and member of our Board for 12 years. He was a great believer in science and its application to create a healthier, more equitable and better world. And he believed passionately in Burnet’s mission and work.

Sadly, Alastair was diagnosed with a brain tumour and died in 2015 at the age of 63.

In honour of Alastair’s significant contribution to Burnet, the Board established the Alastair Lucas Endowment Fund, which provides funding of AUD$200,000 over two years for The Alastair Lucas Prize for Medical Research.

This prize will enable Burnet to attract the highest calibre researchers to the Institute to pursue research into diseases and major health issues of national or global importance.

The coveted prize allows the recipient to begin their life-saving research or project work without having to spend vital time seeking funding.

Thank you for contributing to the Alastair Lucas Endowment Fund.

Where lives are at stake, there is no time to waste.

"We can’t afford to waste time when it comes to lives. And with The Alastair Lucas Fund, we haven’t had to pause for a moment."

Professor Caroline Homer AO, inaugural recipient of the Alastair Lucas Prize for Medical Research, 2018.
