The Institute has three field-based units that address important issues of disease prevention and health promotion through a combination of epidemiological studies and action research. These units are also directly engaged in the development, implementation and evaluation of public health projects in Australia and overseas, primarily in the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.

Public health is an aspect of health services concerned with threats to the overall health and well being of a community based on population health analysis. It generally includes surveillance and control of infectious disease and promotion of healthy behaviors among members of the community.
