Announcing the appointment, Burnet’s Chairman, Alastair Lucas, said Brendan Crabb’s selection to the position was the result of an extensive national and international search which secured an outstanding medical research scientist with significant experience and expertise in infectious diseases of global significance.
“As Director of the Burnet Institute, Professor Crabb’s experience in research and international health will ensure that we continue as a leader in the South-East Asia region – especially in the areas of HIV, malaria, hepatitis,” Mr Lucas said.
Professor Crabb is currently Laboratory Head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, and an International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (USA).
He said he is enthusiastic about further developing Burnet’s reputation as a globally competitive, infectious diseases centre of excellence.
“The integration of the Institute’s areas of expertise under one roof opens up unique possibilities to promote rapid progress in understanding some of the world’s most devastating diseases,” said Professor Crabb.
