Burnet Institute’s new $100 million building is now complete and staff  are now busy at work in their new state-of-the-art laboratories. The relocation of staff into the building has been an exciting time in the history of the Institute, marking the completion of the 2006 merger between Burnet and the Austin Research Institute.

The Burnet Institute commenced construction on the new premises in 2008 in partnership with The Alfred hospital. The additional floor space was created to allow for the future growth of the Institute across both its laboratory-based research and public health programs.

In a progressive initiative, the building project was undertaken to help secure the Institute’s financial future by generating income from leasing arrangements. The tenants include La Trobe University, Monash University and the Baker IDI, offering the opportunity to strengthen and build existing AMREP partnerships and the potential for new individual and organisational collaborations.

The ‘new’ building is in fact a horizontal and vertical extension of the existing Alfred Centre, at the corner of Punt and Commercial Roads. The four additional floors deliver an additional 14,200sqm of space to Burnet, of offices, research laboratories and a specialised Physical Containment Level 3 (PC3) laboratory.

The building has been funded by the generous support of the Federal Government’s Department of Health and Aging, the State Government’s Department of Innovation Industry and Regional Development and private philanthropists. Building company Baulderstone were appointed to manage construction of the building which was completed ahead of schedule and on budget in April 2010.
