Breast cancer is the most common cancer suffered by women and can affect all age groups. Whilst early detection through public awareness campaigns has assisted in increasing the chances of a positive prognosis, one in 11 Australian women will be diagnosed with the disease before the age of 75. Such an alarming figure means that each one of us can expect either a family member or friend will become a breast cancer patient.
Research is focusing on delivering combination therapies to produce a cure or less traumatic treatments. Laboratory research and clinical trials currently underway at the Burnet Institute are providing hope that such therapies will become a reality.
However, research takes time and a great deal of funding. It was against this background that Bob Jane established The Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Foundation (BBBCF), (formally the Austin Breast Cancer Foundation) to promote and assist in funding the breast cancer research undertaken at the Institute.

From its early beginnings, the BBBCF has grown to become an energetic force in the fight against breast cancer, raising in excess of $100,000 annually, all of which is donated to the Institute to fund valuable research projects.
Mr Bill Jane, Chairman of the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Foundation, received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day Honours list 2004, for his services to the community through fundraising for the Institute's breast cancer research.
The patron of the BBBCF is Bob Jane and his brother, Bill Jane currently presides as Chairman. The Governors of the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Foundation are Professor Bruce Loveland, Mr Glen Orwin (Treasurer), and Mrs Tracey Taylor.
