Professor Mark Hogarth – Director of Commercialisation and Research Strategy

Mark has extensive experience in commercialisation of research.  Since the mid 1980’s he has sat on a variety of biotech company boards, has consulted for industry and is an inventor on seven patent families with applications in the fields of inflammation, cancer and infectious diseases.  As an NHMRC research fellow and during his time as a director of the Austin Research Institute he was involved in the formation of a number of spin out companies and negotiation of commercial deals.   His role involves the development of the Institutes commercialisation strategies and interactions with industry.


Serina Cucuzza – Commercial Development Manager

Serina has a background in both business and science and has worked with the Institute since 2005.  Her main role involves sourcing commercial investment for early stage R&D generated from the Burnet Institute.  She is also involved in the preparation of commercial grant applications, the negotiation of commercial deals and collaboration agreements and the identification of commercial opportunities within the Institute.

Maria Harrison-Smith – Intellectual Property Manager

Maria Harrison-Smith is a registered Patent and Trade Marks Attorney and the Intellectual Property Manager at the Burnet Institute Maria has been with us since 2003, concentrating primarily on the development and prosecution of the Institute’s patent portfolio. Her work also involves providing intellectual property advice within the Institute, identifying new IP and assisting with licensing and confidentiality agreements.

•    Registered Patent Attorney (Australia and New Zealand)
•    Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law, University of Melbourne
•    Member: Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand


Alison Greenway – Manager of Research and Legal Officer

Alison is a qualified Australian Lawyer and has extensive experience in medical research leading research into the pathogenic mechanisms of HIV-1 infection.  Alison provides service for a wide cross section of the Institute activities liaising with internal and external scientific and corporate groups to secure research funding. Her role includes the management of contractual matters relating to cooperative and contract research and development activities.  Specifically includes for reviewing, drafting and negotiation, or obtaining such advice from independent sources.

Patricia Mottram – Research Project Manager

Pat has extensive experience in project management having being involved in a number of the Institute’s spin out companies and their subsidiaries.  Her role includes supervising preclinical and clinical trial research to commercialize research products from the Burnet Institute.  Pat provides an interface and information conduit between laboratory researchers and the commercial partners, collection and collation of key data, writing Research Development Plans, publishing research papers, compiling budgets, and milestone (Gantt) charts as well as preparing Technical Dossiers.
