Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the south-eastern coast of India. Eighty-four per cent of elders in Sri Lanka live in rural areas. The life expectancy of Sri Lankans at birth in 1945-46 was 44 years, and in 1996-2000 was 73 years. Women tend to live longer than men, and live through a long period of widowhood.
