About The Centre for Harm Reduction

The Centre for Harm Reduction (CHR) is part of the Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health (Burnet Institute) in Melbourne, Australia.

The Centre was established in 1998 to consolidate and build on the Burnet Institute’s experience and expertise in the prevention of drug-related harm, especially HIV infection among and from IDUs, in Asia and Australia.

CHR is a leading technical agency in the Asia Pacific region for developing responses to reduce drug-related harm. CHR’s staff embodies a wealth of experience and expertise in programming for the prevention of HIV infection among IDUs, with particular reference to the Asia Pacific region.

CHR aims to implement harm reduction and related programs; to conduct comprehensive research into harm reduction issues and to widely disseminate findings; to promote and support advocacy for harm reduction; to build capacity and deliver training in harm reduction practice for a variety of audiences; to develop strategic alliances and partnerships for the promotion and implementation of harm reduction activities. Associated units at the Burnet Institute include the Centre for International Health and the Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health Research.
