Join in the fun of the MELBOURNE CITY ROMP: Romp for a Cure
Part treasure hunt, part ‘Amazing Race’, part puzzle – the Melbourne City Romp on Sunday 21 March, 2010 is a charity fundraising event like no other! Armed with a map, clue sheet and mobile phone, teams of 2-6 will attempt to solve challenges at Checkpoints located across Melbourne. Up to 20,000 Rompers from across Australia are expected to take part and help support Burnet’s Romp for a Cure fundraising initiative. All funds go directly to Burnet’s fight against The ‘Big Three’: HIV, TB and malaria, some of the world’s worst infectious diseases. To enter the Romp go to www.cityromp.com. Hurry, online entries close this Friday 19 March at 2pm. Entries will be accepted in person on-site on the day between 10 am and 11.30am.
About Burnet
At Burnet, everything we do is focused on making a sustainable difference to people’s health, in Australia and around the world.
The Burnet Institute is a leading Australian medical research and public health organisation focused on improving the health of disadvantaged and marginalised groups. Burnet’s culture links innovative discovery-oriented research with development and humanitarian action. We integrate our world-class laboratory and field-based research into multidisciplinary programs to prevent, detect and treat diseases of global significance. This unique approach allows us to make a tangible and sustainable impact on health in both developed and developing countries.
The medical research programs conducted in our Australian laboratories encompass three areas: infectious diseases – hepatitis, HIV, influenza, malaria and tuberculosis; cancers – breast, ovarian, prostate and blood cancers; and autoimmune diseases: rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. We undertake innovative epidemiological research, including surveillance and modelling complemented by participatory social research. We work at international and regional levels, and with governments, civil society and communities in more than 15 countries. We build capacity and strengthen health services to reduce the impact of major health problems. Some of these include: reducing the impact and spread of HIV, promoting sexual and reproductive health, and improving the health of children, youth, parents and older people.
Burnet comprises four Centres – Virology, Immunology, Population Health and International Health. These Centres represent our key areas of research and public health.
