We place great emphasis on postgraduate study, providing high-quality research and training in areas related to public health and basic science in infectious diseases and immunology.

In 2011, the Institute had 33 students undertaking PhD research programs, enrolled via Monash University, the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and RMIT.

These PhDs covered a range of topics including HIV entry and replication, HCV virology and immunology, autoimmune disease, malaria, drug misuse, sexual health and vaccine development.

Applying for Postgraduate Study

1. Decide what you are interested in
Check out Burnet’s website to read up on our current projects and areas of research.

2. Contact potential supervisors
If you find a specific project or area of interest, e-mail the supervisors to discuss further. Also forward them your most recent academic transcript and current resume.

3. Select a university department
You need to be enrolled in a PhD program at a university in Victoria. Your potential supervisor may hold an honorary position in a particular department that could influence your decision. Check the program entrance requirements and confirm that you are eligible to apply.

4. Review potential research scholarships
Check out the scholarships available on the various university websites. The closing date for scholarships is usually 31 October (end of year round) but some universities also offer a mid-year round closing 31 May. JASON, a nation-wide postgraduate scholarship database, also provides information about funding opportunities through various scholarship programs run through universities, charitable foundations, government and private institutions.

5. Register as a PhD student at Burnet
Once you have enrolled at your university and secured a scholarship you can then register as a student at Burnet by completing the online form.
